Berkshire Pork

Berkshire pork is a well-marbled, immensely flavorful meat, often referred to as "The Wagyu of Pork." Our pigs are raised sustainably on pasture, with the ability to engage in natural behaviors their entire lives. This is important to us, and we hope it is important to you, too!

Our Pigs

Why do muddy pigs and curly tails matter?  Most of the pork available in this country comes from factory raised hogs. These pigs live their entire lives on metal and concrete, unable to do what pigs do - root, forage, and roll in the mud. Their tight quarters and dense populations lead to even more stress. Confinement stress causes fighting and aggression, which can lead to tail biting - the reason most pigs have their tails docked (preventatively) when they are young. Sows live in farrowing crates when delivering and nursing piglets - cages so small they can't even turn around.

At Renewed Roots Ranch our pigs have their tails. They graze through pasture where they are able to root in the dirt and wallow in the mud on warm days. Our pigs don't fight, and they aren't stressed. Sows deliver in the pasture wherever they want (summer) or in large barn stalls with outdoor runs (winter). They lead wonderful, happy lives getting their needs met, and more (treats and scratches are standard fare here!). That lack of stress hormones means better meat for you, and ethical treatment you can be proud to purchase.
